MSc Biotechnology

The Faculty of Life Sciences and Biotechnology offers a two-year (four semesters) or a one-year (2 semesters) academic programme in MSc Biotechnology. The two-year MSc (Biotechnology) programme started in the year 2011, while the one-year MSc (Biotechnology) programme started in 2025. The endeavour of the Faculty is to teach the latest concepts and research technologies and prepare students for careers in research and teaching in modern biology and biotechnology. In addition to the traditional core areas, various electives such as Biochemical engineering, Cancer biology, Neurosciences, Plant molecular biology, Protein engineering, Tissue engineering, and Virology are offered. New emerging technological areas such as climate change and AI/machine learning have been included in the teaching curriculum. A major component of the curriculum at FLSB is Laboratory Techniques and Projects in the final semester. Our alumni are very well placed across the globe in various academic (PhD positions), industrial or teaching positions at prestigious institutions.

Eligibility

One-Year Programme

A candidate must have passed a Bachelor’s degree, (BSc, B.Pharm, BVSc, B.E., B.Tech, MBBS, etc.) in any area of Biological Sciences / Agriculture and allied sciences; Veterinary and allied sciences / Biotechnology / Biochemical Technology,  under 10+2+4 pattern from a recognized institution or an examination recognized by the University as its equivalent with a minimum of 55% marks (or an equivalent grade).

Eligibility for one year program will be assessed based on the relevant subjects studied during the Bachelor’s program.

Two-Year Programme

A candidate must have passed a Bachelor’s degree (BSc, B.Pharm, BVSc, B.E., B.Tech, MBBS, etc.) in any area of Biological Sciences / Chemistry / Agriculture and allied sciences; Veterinary and allied sciences / Biotechnology / Biochemical Technology,  under 10+2+3 or 10+2+4 pattern from a recognized institution or an examination recognized by the University as its equivalent with a minimum of 55% marks (or an equivalent grade).

Biology Requirement:

  • If Biology was not studied at the Bachelor’s level, the candidate must have studied and passed Biology at the 10+2 level.

Note: In the case where Master's Programme is available in one as well as in two year format, the candidates are advised to choose the programme appropriately as per their eligibility. In case, a candidate has opted for one year programme and later it is found that he/she is not eligible for one year programme but is eligible for two year programme, he/she will be offered two year programme. Moreover, if eligible for both, at the time of admission, the switch between one year and two year programmes is allowed.

Modes of Admission

Admission to various Master’s programmes is offered through two modes:

1. SAU Entrance Test Mode:

  • For Indian Candidates: Center-based online tests conducted by the University.
  • For other SAARC Candidates (excluding India): Proctored online tests on stipulated dates.

2. Direct Admission Mode (Without SAU Entrance Test):

  • In India: Based on scores from national-level tests (Like JEE/CUET/NEET/CAT/CLAT/NET/GATE etc).
  • In Other SAARC Countries: Based on national-level test scores or qualifying examination results from recognized institutions.
  • For Non-SAARC Candidates: Based on scores obtained in their qualifying examination.

Format of the Entrance Test Paper

  • The computer based entrance test will be of 2 hours duration.
  • There will be no negative marking.
  • The question paper will consist of 100 multiple-choice questions out of which candidates will have to attempt 70.
  • First 70 attempted questions will be evaluated.

Syllabus for Entrance Test

  • Some questions will be of 10+2 level from Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. 
  • Some questions will be of undergraduate level from Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Animal Sciences, Plant Sciences, Genetics, Microbiology, Biophysics and Biostatistics.

MSc Biotechnology

The M.Sc. programme, started in the year 2011, is designed to train young minds to develop into responsible scientists. In the last 15 years, students graduating from FLSB have spread out throughout the globe in various academic (Ph.D. positions), industrial or teaching positions at prestigious institutions. The endeavour of the Faculty is to teach the latest concepts and research technologies and prepare students for careers in research and teaching in modern biology and biotechnology. In addition to the traditional core areas of Biochemistry, Cell biology, Molecular biology, Microbiology, Biostatistics, and Immunology, various electives such as Biochemical engineering, Bioinformatics, Cancer biology, Neurosciences, Plant molecular biology, Protein engineering, Tissue engineering, and Virology, are offered. Emerging technological areas advances have been included in the teaching curriculum such as climate change and AI/machine learning.
