MA Economics

The Master's programme in Economics is a unique programme which equips the students with the intellectual breadth, theoretical rigor as well as the quantitative and computational skills which are necessary for conducting advanced research, teaching and working on various issues spanning across the discipline of economics (with a special focus on economic development in South Asia). The duration of the programme is either one or two years. The programme is divided into a core curriculum consisting of courses which provides a strong foundation in microeconomics, macroeconomics, mathematics, statistics and econometrics, and contemporary economic issues in the economies of South Asia. In addition, the programme offers a wide array of optional courses in areas ranging from game theory, industrial organization, computational macroeconomics, environmental economics, efficiency and productivity analysis, urban and labor economics etc. It also imparts a strong foundation in computational skills by training in several softwares and programming languages.  After completing the programme, the students in the past have received job offers from academic institutions like Universities and research thinktanks in both SAARC region and elsewhere, as well as from major organizations in both public and private sector. Many of them have also joined doctoral programmes in reputed universities around the world.

Eligibility

One-Year Programme

A candidate must have passed a Bachelor's degree under 10+2+4 pattern from a recognized institution or an examination recognized by the University as its equivalent with a minimum of 55% marks (or an equivalent grade)

Additional Requirement:

The candidate should have studied atleast one course in Micro Economics, one in Macro Economics and two courses in Mathematics/ Statistics/ Basic Econometrics.

Two-Year Programme

A candidate must have passed a Bachelor's degree under 10+2+3 or 10+2+4 pattern from a recognized institution or an examination recognized by the University as its equivalent with a minimum of 50% marks (or an equivalent grade)

Mathematics Requirement:

Mathematics as a subject of study at either the Bachelor’s level OR the 10+2 level.

Note : In the case where Master's Programme is available in one as well as in two year format, the candidates are advised to choose the programme appropriately as per their eligibility. In case, a candidate has opted for one year programme and later it is found that he/she is not eligible for one year programme but is eligible for two year programme, he/she will be offered two year programme. Moreover, if eligible for both, at the time of admission, the switch between one year and two year programmes is allowed.

Modes of Admission

Admission to various Master’s programmes is offered through two modes:

1. SAU Entrance Test Mode:

  • For Indian Candidates: Center-based online tests conducted by the University.
  • For other SAARC Candidates (excluding India): Proctored online tests on stipulated dates.

2. Direct Admission Mode (Without SAU Entrance Test):

  • In India: Based on scores from national-level tests (Like JEE/CUET/NEET/CAT/CLAT/NET/GATE etc).
  • In Other SAARC Countries: Based on national-level test scores or qualifying examination results from recognized institutions.
  • For Non-SAARC Candidates: Based on scores obtained in their qualifying examination.
