A PhD in English is an advanced research degree designed for scholars who wish to engage deeply with literature, language, culture, and critical theory. The programme provides rigorous training in research methodology, literary theory, and interdisciplinary approaches, enabling scholars to engage meaningfully with diverse texts, traditions, and intellectual frameworks.
Students shall begin with coursework focused on research methodology, theoretical frameworks, and subject specialization, followed by comprehensive research under the guidance of an approved supervisor. This phase would help refine research questions and situate the scholar within existing debates.
The core of the programme is the doctoral thesis—an original, substantial book size piece of research that offers a fresh perspective on a literary, theoretical, or cultural problem. Candidates would conduct archival work, textual analysis, or interdisciplinary research, developing a nuanced argument that advances scholarly conversations.
Apart from British literary canon, we encourage studies in anglophone literature, especially South Asian Literature and Literary Studies and Comparative Literature.
